A brand new installment of the Witcher game series is currently in development, CD Projekt Red confirms today. What can we expect from the latest installment? Is it going to be yay or nay?

Developer said the new Witcher game will use a new game engine

CD Projekt Red is not a small name in the gaming industry. Cyberpunk 2077 and Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are games developed by CD Projekt Red and have gathered a massive cult following. Witcher fans however can now be happy with the latest announcement following Witcher 3 which was released way back in 2015.

“We’re happy to announce that the next installment in The Witcher series of video games is currently in development, kicking off a new saga for the franchise.”

“This is an exciting moment as we’re moving from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5, beginning a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games. It covers not only licensing but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine, where relevant.”

“We’ll closely collaborate with Epic Games’ developers with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences”, said CD Projekt Red on their official website.

Unreal Engine 5 is believed to be the future of gaming. Huge game titles such as The Matrix Awakens, Black Myth Wukong, Dragon Quest, and much more are confirmed to be using this new game engine. For context, here is a demo video for The Matrix Awakens that runs on Unreal Engine 5.

The graphics and realism are unmatched by anything we have seen before in any video game. You can only imagine how good the new Witcher game would look on this engine.

In the announcement, CD Projekt Red has also shared a ‘teaser’ image that features a medallion and a text phrase that said: “a new saga begins”. As witcher gamers can infer, the wolf medallion belongs to a witcher, someone who fights monsters, ghouls, and other mystical creatures in anticipation of rewards. However, since it is”a new saga”, fans might not be able to see Geralt (the main character from Witcher 3) in the next game.

It is also believed that the new game will feature an open-world experience, similar to the likes of Elden Ring, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild, Ghost of Tsushima, and much more.

Release date and other info

As of now, no further details about the game on development time frame or release date were given. The last game, Witcher 3: Wild Hunt took three and a half years to develop, and since they have to start from scratch on a new game engine, we may have to wait longer than expected for the new saga.
